And the Mental Health World Cup results are in…!
You may remember that we were planning to enter a team in this year’s Mental Health World Cup.
Well, the tournament took place last Saturday, May 11th at QPR’s Loftus Road stadium. Our team was there at 8.45am in glorious sunshine. Kits were handed out and we got changed for a 9.30am kick off.
Our team played as Germany, which put us in Group F against England (MCS), Ukraine (Mayflex), Romania (Chiltern Contracts), Spain (Overbury Central) and the USA (AmpersandFloors).
Our first match was against Ukraine, which resulted in a clean sheet and 2 nil victory. We then won all of our group games, coming out top and going straight into the last 32. We then landed a well-fought 1-0 victory against South Korea (Overbury Northern).
All buoyed up by reaching the last 16, we got drawn against Greece (Collins Construction). Unfortunately, this is when the wheels came flying off. After being 2-0 up, we hit the final whistle drawing 2-2. Then – very unlike Germany – we crashed out on penalties. We were gutted!
Despite not winning, our team had a fantastic day up against some very worthy opponents. We also raised £2,000 for CALM and other mental health charities. Overall, the event raised an incredible £198,000.
The Mental Health World Cup isn’t just about competition – it’s about camaraderie, raising awareness and supporting mental health initiatives. If you’re inspired to join in, applications for the 2025 tournament are already open. Head to www.mentalhealthworldcup.org.uk to learn more.
